Specialist in Endocrinology and Nutrition

Grounded in science, guided by empathy.

About me

I’m Bruno Bouça, a specialist in Endocrinology and Nutrition. I chose Endocrinology because physiology has always fascinated me: it is a whole-body speciality that looks at the patient as a whole and treats very different conditions, many of them uncommon. I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto) and completed my specialist training at Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central. I currently work in private practice.

The way I work comes down to one idea: medicine grounded in science and guided by empathy. In every appointment I try to explain what is happening in the body and why, in plain language, so that we can decide on the best way forward together. That is also the aim of the content I share on YouTube and Instagram.

Outside the consulting room, I enjoy building with Lego and I’m learning to code.

First visit

What to expect at your first visit

Knowing what to expect helps us make the most of our time together. Broadly speaking, the first appointment goes like this.

  1. Before: what to bring

    • Recent blood tests, scans and other investigations, with their reports.
    • A list of the medicines and supplements you take, with the doses (or the packets themselves).
    • Letters or reports from other doctors, if you have them.
    • If you have diabetes: your blood glucose records or access to your sensor or insulin pump data.
    • The questions you would like answered, written down on paper or on your phone.
    • Photo ID and, if applicable, your health insurance card. Agreements vary from one location to another: please check directly when you book.
    • You do not need a referral from your GP. If you have a letter from your doctor, please bring it.
  2. During: what happens

    • We talk about why you have come, your medical and family history, your habits and your goals.
    • This is followed by a focused physical examination, which may include weight, height, waist circumference, blood pressure and an examination of the neck and thyroid.
    • We go through the results you have brought together, and I explain clearly what is happening and why.
    • At the end, we agree on a plan together, tailored to you.
    • Length: there is no set length and no stopwatch. Each appointment has its own pace, and the time adapts to what we need to discuss.
  3. After: what comes next

    • Blood tests or other investigations may be requested. Some hormone tests need specific conditions (fasting, time of day or phase of the menstrual cycle), which will be explained to you.
    • At the follow-up appointment, we review the results and adjust the plan. How long until then depends on each situation.
    • Booking follow-up: this is done at the location itself, just like the first appointment.
    • Between appointments: as a rule, you can send questions, usually by email (see the contact details at the bottom of the page). They are answered whenever possible; some need to be looked at in an appointment.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You do not need a referral from your GP to book an appointment.

If you have a letter or report from your GP, please bring it: it helps me understand your history better.

  • Do you accept health insurance?

Insurance agreements depend on each location.

When booking, please check directly with the location whether your insurance is accepted.

  • How much does an appointment cost?

The fee depends on each location. To find out the price, please contact the location where you would like to be seen directly: contact details are in the section Locations.

  • How do video consultations work?

You can request a video consultation by email at [email protected]. Practical details, such as the platform, the fee and how to pay, are given in reply to your email.

For the appointment, choose a private place with a good internet connection, and have your test results and list of medicines to hand. If you have scales or a blood pressure monitor at home, it can be helpful to take those measurements beforehand.

  • Do I need blood tests before my first visit?

As a rule, you do not need to have tests done specially before your first visit. If you already have recent blood tests or investigations, please bring them. If new tests are needed, they are requested at the appointment, according to your situation. Some hormone tests need specific conditions (fasting, time of day or phase of the menstrual cycle), so it is best to have them on medical advice.

  • When should I see an endocrinologist?

Endocrinology treats disorders of the hormones and metabolism. An appointment may make sense, for example, if you have diabetes, thyroid problems (nodules, an underactive or overactive thyroid), excess weight or obesity, irregular periods, PMOS (formerly PCOS), menopausal symptoms, low testosterone, difficulty getting pregnant, osteoporosis or pituitary or adrenal disorders. It is often your GP who suggests the appointment, but you can also take the initiative yourself.

  • What is PMOS?

PMOS stands for Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, the new name for what used to be called PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). The name changed because the condition is not just about the ovaries, nor about “cysts”: it involves several hormones and the metabolism, with effects on periods, fertility, the skin and the risk of diabetes. Diagnosis and treatment are always tailored to each person.
